β¦ Synopsis
Dication dissociations of the five-membered nitrogen heterocycles (pyrrole, imidazole, pyrazole, 1,2,3-triazole, 1,2,4triazole and tetrazole) were investigated using charge separation mass spectrometry. Differences in the spectra for isomer pairs reflect an absence of C,N scrambling prior to fragmentation. Kinetic energy releases show that the rapid charge separations occur from a ring configuration but slow metastable decays proceed by ring opening. The major charge separation reactions produce the protonated analogues of HCN and N, , HCNH+ and HN,*; the complementary partner ions, C,H,N+ and CHN,+, undergo secondary decay to HCNH', HCN or N, , which can be compared with similar reactions of these ions in collision-induced dissociation.
