โœฆ Synopsis

  1. Over the centuries the ecological function of the large rivers in The Netherlands has gradually deteriorated.

  2. Although water quality is now much better than it was some years ago, more measures are needed to attain ecological restoration. One such measure is the excavation of secondary channels in the floodplain. These channels provide living conditions for organisms that are no longer present in the summer bed.

  3. Design studies, carried out in close cooperation between ecologists and engineers, show that secondary channels do not necessarily interfere with existing functions and interests. Along the Waal two pilot channels will be opened in the near future. The design of future channels can be improved by closely monitoring these projects.
