✦ Synopsis

We report experimental evidence of Second-harmonic generation (SHG) due to intersubband transitions in (G a A s / A l_{x} G a_{1-x} A 8) step quantum wells using a multipass or "waveguide" structure. A SHG conversion efficiency of (3.46 \times 10^{-4}) has been achieved which is one order of magnitude above the value obtained for the Brewster's angle arrangement.

A method is described for the optimized design of quantum-well structures, with respect to maximizing the second-order susceptibilities relevant for second harmonic generation. The possibility is explored of obtaining resonantly enhanced nonlinear optical susceptibilities in quantum wells with two b

Analytical expressions for the components of second-harmonic susceptibility tensor for the L-valley quantum well structures are derived employing the perturbative density-matrix formulation within the time dependent local density approximation (TDLDA). Indirect and direct Coulomb interactions are sh
