โœฆ Synopsis

Techniques necessary for measurement of the second harmonic of the insonifying frequency backscattered from ultrasonic contrast agents are described, and used to determine this characteristic for the agents Albunexo and FS069. The results confnm theoreticai predictions that scattered second barmonk pressure is proportionai to the square of the incident pressure. Because contrast agents of the type investigated improve discrimination of blood echoes against tissue echoes by means of the second harmonic of the insonifying frequency, these results allow a comparison of the relative merits of Albunex and FSO69 for harmonic imaging. 0 1997 World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology.

Quantitative measurements of second harmonic and first harmonic Doppler were carried out using two ultrasound contrast agents, Albunexc and FS069. The RMS amplitudes of the Doppler shift spectra were measured as a function of the concentration of the agents, frequency and transmitted acoustic pressu
