β¦ Synopsis
We present here a combinatorial approach to special divisors and secant divisors on curves over finite fields based on their relations with error-correcting codes. Applying to linear systems on curves over finite fields numerous coding theory bounds one gets a lot of bounds on their dimensions. This approach works for curves with many rational points, which leads, for example, to certain ameliorations of Clifford's theorem for such curves.

It is demonstrated that the dual polar space of type Sp 2n (q), q>2, can be generated as a geometry by ( 2n n )&( 2n n&2 ) points. 1998 Academic Press ## 1. Introduction We assume the reader is familiar with the basic definitions relating to undirected graphs and linear incidence system or point-
It is demonstrated that the generating rank of the dual polar space of type U 2n (q 2 ) is 2n n when q > 2. It is also shown that this is equal to the embedding rank of this geometry.
Connections between q-rook polynomials and matrices over finite fields are exploited to derive a new statistic for Garsia and Remmel's q-hit polynomial. Both this new statistic mat and another statistic for the q-hit polynomial recently introduced by Dworkin are shown to induce different multiset Ma
