✦ Synopsis
When a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the CuO 2 planes of cuprate high temperature superconductors, the normal fluid response is expected to include contributions from quasiparticles with relevant mean free paths greater than the penetration depth. As a result, a non-local electrodynamical response is expected. Optimally doped single crystals of YBCO have been prepared such that a microwave field can be applied parallel to the c-axis with negligible demagnetization effects. We report on efforts to identify non-local quasiparticle effects in these crystals using cavity perturbation measurements of the microwave surface resistance.
