Crane UK recently secured a ยฃ400 000 order from Chemineer Ltd for the supply of 6 package units to pump 100% pure glycerine across John Crane mechanical seals used on the main process agitators producing Terephthalic acid at a URUMQI PTA plant in China.
The units with a design pressure of 47 bar meet ICI specification, based on previous PTA plant technology. However, they are the first to incorporate environmental protection to withstand the harsh variations of temperature from -40ยฐC in winter to + 40ยฐC in summer, With temperature control being an important design consideration due to the high viscosity of pure glycerine (1000 Cst @ 18ยฐC), the John Crane design incorporates an electronically operated trace heating system and heat exchanger designed to ASME VIII/TEMA C.
