Patents Piston ring with a multilayer assembly

Applicant: Federal-Mogul Burscheid GmbH, Germany This invention relates to a piston ring with improved running-in and wear properties and to the production method employed. A series of layers are deposited on the bearing surface of the piston ring by thermal spraying techniques. The first is layer of nickel alloy as a coupling agent. The second is an anti-abrasive layer of a molybdenum alloy with CrC, WC and MoC and the third is a running-in layer which comprises an AlCu alloy or a nickel-graphite alloy.
