reinforcement of silica and Permauite Sigma 533, where the secondary reinforcement is barytes. For applications where only low bolt loading is available (e.g. flanges which are giass-lined, ceramic, plastic or are so distorted that they include areas of low gasket stress) a third material, Permanite Sigma 522, has now been added to the range. This material has a reinforcing core of Sigma 533 onto which highly conformable expanded PTFE surface layers have been sintered. PTFE is well known for its chemical resistance and is suitable for use in media including concentrated acids, alkalis, oxidizing agents, steam and general chemicals.

In oxidizing acids such as concentrated nitric acid, PTFE-based compounds exceed the performance of reinforced graphite sheet and rubber bound, fibre reinforced sheet.
