[2] Bolt tightening in stages, utilizing a cross-pattern sequence, allows for uniform distribution of the stresses in the gasket and throughout the mating flanges. This prevents damage to the gasket surfaces and increases the success rate of the bolted connection. For problematic flange connections the use of bolt-torque tightening techniques was recommended and implemented.
