The origins of two decay constants in the scintillation decay of cerium-doped gadolinium oxyorthosilicate (Gd z(Si04 )O :Ce) are investigated using UV light. We find that build-ups and long decay components observed with gamma-ray excitation are due to non-radiative energy transfer from Gd to Ce . T
