C]lemica/JVews.--Hitherto there have been known only vegetable tannin with its 800 varieties, and synthetic tannin or digallic acid, not to speak of the so-called mineral tannin, obtained from coal, peat, etc. The author has for a long time sought for an animal tannin, i. e., one formed in the organism of an animal, and appearing either in its secretions or in its tissues. Having been engaged with the weevils, well-knowrl from the damages which they occasion in granaries, he sought for tannin, knowing that, as far back as 181o, M. Penunt, of Lyon, had found gallic acid in these insects.
