D e a r Sir!
T h e f6110wing observations were made in consequence of my finding the place of Pallas different from that assigned to i t hy calculation.
T h e instrument employed was a very fine Newtonian Telescope of 6 ; inches aperiure and 40 inches focus, with a micrometer furnished with spiders lines, eachdivision of which is precisely equal to half a second. The power used was 98.
The time sidereal was taken by an assistant with a chronometer which was afterwards compared with the clock.
T h e observations are divided into sets of which the means are afterwards taken i n order to obtain a more accurate result. - H e n r y K a t e r .
