✦ Synopsis

The design of the reinforced concrete flange of composite beams against in-plane-shear and out-of-plane bending. The actual technical rules for the design of the reinforced concrete flanges of composite beams with respect to the combined strains resulting from in-plane-shear and out-of-plane-bending reduce the analysis to a simple superposition of the results of separate assessments against shear and bending. Having this in mind and taking into consideration that the design of composite beams is based in many cases on plasticity assumptions for global and local situations, the necessity of a more detailed description of the forces and moments in the flange for verifying the basic assumptions of this superposition rule may arise. This can be done by modelling the load-path in the concrete flange with an inclined compression strut. The following paper will explain the basic assumptions of this model. In a second step design-diagrams for the transverse reinforcement in the concrete flange are developed. To check the load-bearing-capacity of the concrete compression zone in the flange limit-state-functions are derived. The use of pre-cast-elements with on-site-concrete for the reinforced concrete flange, this application is very common for commercial buildings, and the consequences for the design of the reinforcement resulting from not closed compression joints between the pre-cast-elementsi. e. the transmission of the inclined compression strut is limitedare discussed.
