The form&m recently developed by Poplc and co-workers for restricted Ilartree-Fock calculattons on high spin ogcn sliells is extended to ;1 general trcatmcnt of singly cxclted states. The limrtations of the method and possible alternativr approachcs are briefly discussed.

β¦ Synopsis
SCF CI bendi-g curxes for the ground and first four low lying singlet excited states of HCN were calculated using the e.xperimental equiliirium distances_ No other r A" state appears close to 1 r A". We agree with former theoretical studies suggesting that one of the fmt two low lying excited states is of' A' symmetry; however we fmd them in reversed order. Both observed x and g systems probably arise from the same 1 'A" electronic state. Our calculated 3 'A state is in fairly good agreement with the e_?iperimental ??"A' system. Some comments on -the E system are added.

## Abstract A practical scheme for the calculation of excited states of the same symmetry as a given reference state is outlined in the context of the HartreeβFock method. In order to prevent the excited state from βcollapsingβ into a lowerβlying state, the prediagonalized Fock matrix is diagonaliz
SCP CI H-CN dissociation curves are reported for several singlet excited states. Predissociatton seems the main photofragmentation process leading to CN(B 2~\*) and thus it is questionable whether HCN is 1 proper molecule to test dissociation models based on a single repukive surface; however, there
## Abstract One can treat the linear variation calculation by the perturbation expansion; on the other hand, one can also relate the perturbed wave function for the __m__th state to the __m__th eigenvector and justify the upper bound nature of the perturbation calculations for excited states. One c
