✦ Synopsis
The volatiles of four roses with different fragrance types were sampled by dynamic headspace and analysed by GC and GC-MS. The composition of the headspace of the modem English rose 'Othello' is comparable to that of rose oil obtained from Rosa hmuscenu Mill. In contrast 'Duchesse de Montebello' (Rosa alba type) contains high concentrations of /?-phenylethyl alcohol and /?-phenylethyl acetate. 'Lichtkonigin Lucia', a modem hybrid rose, is characterized by considerable amounts of green notes. The Floribunda grandiflora rose 'Queen Elizabeth' shows a completely different pattern with 3,5-dimethoxytoluene, the theaspiranes and ionone derivatives as the main components.
