Un 24 décembre, au cœur des Highlands, en Écosse.
Une tempête de neige particulièrement féroce piège un groupe de voyageurs alors que ceux-ci s’apprêtent à rejoindre qui des amis, qui de la famille pour le réveillon de Noël.
La météo ne leur laisse pas le choix : ils vont devoir se réfugier dans un manoir isolé, en bordure d’un loch. Et faire contre mauvaise fortune bon cœur : tous tombent d’accord pour organiser à la sauvette un réveillon en commun.
Pourtant, les relations au sein du groupe vont rapidement se dégrader. Il faut dire que c’est un bien étrange assemblage qui se retrouve ainsi réuni par la fatalité dans ce manoir lugubre : une famille avec des enfants, un couple en pleine rupture, un couple adultère, un critique gastronomique, un truand en cavale…
Et que dire de l’attitude déroutante des occupants du manoir ? Comment expliquer que tous semblent être des domestiques, livrés à eux-mêmes, et que le mystérieux propriétaire n’apparaisse jamais ?
Chacun comprendra trop tard que les invités ne sont pas arrivés là par hasard. Et que tous ne repartiront pas…
