It is common practice in the laboratory preparation of enzymes to isolate these proteins by the use of chromatographic columns. Although large quantities of protein mixtures may be fractionated by passage through columns, efficient enzyme purification will be achieved only if the operation is properly scaled up from the laboratory to the pilot plant scale.
