✦ Synopsis

Various parameters designed to express quantitatively the softness of chemical species, i.e. their tendency for covalent bond formation, are discussed. Two new parameters are defined which give a good measure of the softness of acceptors and donors, respectively. The classification of acceptors and donors as soft or hard has been found to be a useful means of correlating a large mass of chemical information [l-5]. The empirical criteria leading to this classification further indicate that the relative softness, or hardness, of a species is related to the nature of the bonds it tends to form. The softer an acceptor, and donor, the more covalent the bond formed between them; the harder they
