The first observations of the four-photon ionization of H atoms at 364.7 nm via a three-photon resonance on the Lyman alpha transition are reported. The resonance ionization detection of H and D atoms in an Hz/Dz/Oz/Ar flame is demonstrated and H-atom density profiles arc measured with good spatial

A method is developed which allows in situ measurement of absolute number densities of hydrogen atoms in a flowing afterglow. The diagnosis is based on the detection of the photoions resulting from the resonant four-photon ionization of A atoms at 364.7 nm near saturation conditions.
