✦ Synopsis
This paper provides examples of the use of meteorological satellite data to map the distribution of solar radiation at the earth's surface. Applications are shown for a variety of spatial scales (mesoscale, regional, continental and global) and time periods (daily, monthly and annual). Such data are able to provide a spatial coverage and resolution which is unobtainable using conventional surface based monitoring networks. Recent advances in models, technology and data availability have facilitated the mapping of solar radiation using satellite data.
