An einem Morgen des Jahres 1979 hält die Welt den Atem an. Ein Trupp von terroristischen Fanatikern besetzt die Große Moschee in Mekka und nimmt Tausende von Gläubigen als Geiseln. Unter den Aufständischen, in Männerkleidern versteckt, ist das Mädchen Sarab.
Als der Gegenangriff beginnt und es Fallschirmjäger vom Himmel regnet, flieht sie in die Katakomben und stößt auf einen bewusstlosen französischen Soldaten. Durch einen Abwasserkanal schleppt sie ihn ins Freie und versteckt sich mit ihm in einer leeren Wohnung. Zwischen den beiden, die sich zunächst bis aufs Blut hassen, beginnt eine Geschichte, die in Mekka, dann in Paris, alle Grenzen überschreitet.
Raja Alem lässt eine Liebe zwischen zwei Menschen entstehen, die auf beklemmende Weise unauflöslich wird.
