In this interracial romance, a seven-year-old, African-American girl and a seventeen-year-old, Caucasian boy meet for the first time after he had been manipulated into dressing as Santa Claus and visiting a hospital. Seeing the girl's impoverished condition, his heart goes out to her.

During the years that follow, Jennifer and Johnny occasionally meet again. She takes his advice and works hard in school, eventually becoming an attorney. He takes his own advice and stops working as a laborer in the construction business and goes to college.

But they keep meeting and eventually fall in love, which makes some people happy and others unhappy.
