✦ Synopsis
Loading a structure with an ice sheet results in a line-type contact in the plane of the ice sheet. Sandwich beams under such concentrated ice loading are studied theoretically and experimentally. In the linear elastic analysis the problem is divided into a global part dealing with a sandwich beam, and into a local part investigating only the loaded face and core. These two solutions are superimposed to obtain the total response. In general, good agreement between theory and experiments is found. It is shown that the line-like nature of ice load has a central role in the structural response and shouM be considered in design.
