Sobre o Autor
Nascido em Tóquio, o escritor Shusaku Endo (1923-1996) apresenta em sua obra a perspectiva peculiar de japonês e católico praticante. Após o fim da Segunda Guerra, decidiu continuar seus estudos no Ocidente. Na França, sofreu forte discriminação racial. Teve depressão, contraiu tuberculose e ficou no hospital por meses. Acreditando que o cristianismo havia precipitado sua doença, colocou sua fé em dúvida. Antes de voltar para o Japão, foi para a Palestina realizar pesquisas, o que transformou a sua percepção do cristianismo, levando-o à conclusão de que Cristo também havia conhecido a rejeição. De volta ao Japão, passou a explorar em sua obra os dilemas entre Ocidente e Oriente, fé e descrença, tradição e modernidade. Publicou também estudos teológicos, ensaios, peças de teatro e filmes.
