We have measured the CD, isotropic absorption, and linear dichroism (LD) in the vacuum-uv spectral region for the B-conformations of poly[d(G)]-poly[d(C)] and poly[d(GC)]-poly[d(GC)], and for the 2-conformation of poly[d(GC)]-poly[d(GC)] formed in 70% trifluoroethanol. Modified self-consistent phonon theory when applied to the DNA double helix indicates the existence of fairly long-lived states in which single interbase H bonds are disrupted. One can then postulate a number of situations in which particular disrupted H bonds can enhance particular proton exchange.
