Human and draught animal power in crop production: ex~.. dences, present status and research priorities
A workshop, organized by the AFRC Silsoe Research Institute with support from the Commission of the European Communities, was held in Harare, Zimbabwe. 18-22 January 1993. The workshop has issued a statement outlining the research needs, policy issues and actions agreed by the participants. They stated the basic needs as being: (a) to improve the efficiency of human and animal energy use in agriculture in order to increase food security and the quality of life in rural areas of the tropics, taking into account both genders and all ages of farm workers, environmental, economic and cultural considerations, and both human and animal welfare; (b) to establish agreement on the policy issues listed below; (c) to promote further research into factors affecting the use of human and animal energy and their interaction (as listed below), with the aims of reducing drudgery, improving the effectiveness of draught animal power, and increasing crop production and animal productivity; (d) to take action as outlined below.
