In order to dispel unjustified fears which have been expressed by disabled drivers of invalid tricycles, Mr David Fnnals, Secretary of State for Social Services, has sent the following letter to Mr Peter Large, of the Joint Committee on Mobility for the Disabled, and Mr George Wilson, of the Central Council for the Disabled: "Alf Morris sent you a copy of my announcement, on 23 July. of the decision to phase out the invalid tricycle. Since then many disabled drivers have expressed to me fears that their trikes are about to be withdrawn, and that they may lose their jobs and their independence.
I am sure you must have had many similar enquiries and I would be grateful for your help in dispelling unjustified fears of this kind. The following points may help to clarify the position.
No thicker than an ordinary pencil and weighing little more than a pack of king-sized cigarettes, the slim line Toshiba 8 10 hand-held calculator includes the four basic mathematical functions, also separate keys for percentages and polarity changes and there is a fully independent, three-key memory system. The keys themselves are of 'normal' size, colour coded for rapid identification and well spaced to minimise entry errors. A departure from conventional calculator design is the eight-digit liquid crystal display. As well as offering good legibility in all lighting conditions, this uses very much less power than a digitron display _ a factor which contributes to the claimed 1200 h life of the two silver oxide batteries. The overall dimensions of the Toshiba 8 10 are 70 mm x 9.5 mm x 134 mm (approx 2% in x 3/sin x 5% in) and the weight, complete with batteries, approximately 90 g (3 oz). It will be available through Toshiba office equipment dealers at a recommended retail price of E29.95.
