Will Rabjohns, un fotografo inglese gay famoso ed affermato che deve la sua fortuna alle foto scattate nell’ossessiva ricerca dell’attimo dell’estinzione, come denuncia, ma anche come spasmodico ricordo subconscio di qualcosa accaduto tanto tempo prima. In uno dei suoi appostamenti viene aggredito da un’orsa bianca che lo riduce in fin di vita facendolo ricoverare in coma all’ospedale. E’ durante questo coma che attraverso quelli che sembrano sogni, Will rivive parte della sua giovinezza in Inghilterra . E’ qui che il giovane Will fara’ un incontro che cambiera’ per sempre la sua vita, un incontro con due strane creature, all’apparenza umane (un maschio ed una femmina), delle quali il maschio, Jacob Steep, votato alla spasmodica ed ossessiva distruzione (estinzione) di ogni specie animale.
