The need for new and unconventional methods (mostly biochemical, immunology, gut fluorescence and stable isotopes), especially for the study of the "small food webs", seems to be in conflict with the call for continuity and constancy of methodologies in order to follow long term changes in marine ecosystem dynamics. The best way to characterize the state of the art in marine trophic dynamics is to quote D. S. I'. . . that there are no simple answers, that there is no simple food chain, and that trophic relation-J.-A. VON OERTZEN MCLUSKY and J. R. SARGENT'S concluding remark: ships in the marine environment involve a degree of complexity to challenge any scientist."
