✦ Synopsis

N.Y.: Technical dictionaries Co. 1957 – 317 p.
Experience has shown that three reliable bilingual dictionaries are needed for a high-quality translation of a modern special technical text: a general language dictionary, a polytechnical dictionary, and a special dictionary. This Atomic Dictionary belongs in the latter class. It has been prepared for the English-speaking scientists, researchers, engineers, students, editors, and professional translators who deal with Russian-language publications in the atomic field.
The Dictionary comprises over 23 000 Russian entries and covers primarily nuclear science and nuclear technology including theory, reactors, instrumentation, isotopes, etc. It comprises also many terms from the following areas.
Physics: theoretical, atomic, molecular; physics of solids; crystallography.
Mathematics: elementary; analytic and differential geometry; differential and integral calculus; differential equations; vector analysis; probability theory; statistics; processing of experimental data.
Chemistry and chemical engineering: chemistry of U, Th, Be, Zr; radiation chemistry; isotopes separation; nuclear applications.
Metallurgy of certain metals used in nuclear technology; gamma-ray metallography.
Peaceful and Military Uses of atom, like isotopic tracers in research, industrial atomic power, atomic propulsion, nuclear weapons, etc.
Biophysics and Radiobiology: radiation instruments, radiology, genetics, etc.
Medicine and Biology: elementary terms; names of certain diseases and phenomena associated with radiations and isotopes.
Miscellaneous scientific terms, like those used in computers, automatic control, electronics, library practice, publishing and printing, and other similar fields;
Russian transliteration of Western names frequently encountered in atomic publications (sometimes quite difficult to recognize, like Юз Hughes);
Abbreviations of atomic and related terms.
