โฆ Synopsis
A theoretical study of the capillarity-induced rounding of a nearly spherical surface of revolution is presented. The material inside and/or outside this surface is considered as highly viscous Navier-Stokes liquid and the conditions that the inertial and gravity terms of the corresponding constitutive equation are negligible compared to the viscosity term are employed. Three special cases of material arrangement with respect to the dividing surface are investigated: (i) a particle in nonviscous medium, (ii) a cavity in a viscous continuum and (iii) a viscous inhomogenity in a viscous continuum. Equations for velocity and pressure distribution within and around the surface subject to rounding and that for its relaxation to sphere are derived.
