β¦ Synopsis
Long term efficacy on visual outcome of argon laser photocoagulation on subretinal neovascularization in Senile Macular Degeneration has not yet been evaluated. Three randomised trials have demonstrated the benefit of photocoagulation compared with natural history on visual acuity.
From the randomised trial undertaken in Cr6teil in 1977, 19 patients out of the 60 included, were not available for assessment after 1981 (6 died). 8 patients out of 35 patients with unilateral lesion at presentation experienced an involvement of their second eye, between 1977 and 1984.
In the observed group, 23 patients out of 30 could be followed for a period of more than 2 years (range 25 to 66 months; mean 46.7 months). 20 patients had an absolute central scotoma at the end of the follow-up.
In the argon blue-green laser treated group, 24 patients out of 30 were available for evaluation more than 2 years after photo-
