This p a p e r deals w i t h t h e d i s t r u b a n c e due to s t e a d y r o t a t i o n of axis y m m e t r i c bodies in a viscous incompressible fluid of infinite c o n d u c t i v i t y in which t h e u n i f o r m a m b i e n t flow field is collinear w i t h t h e u n i f o r m m a g n e t i c field. T h e k n o w n results of S o w e r b y 1) for t h e p r o b l e m "Couple on a r o t a t i n g s p h e r o i d " in a slow s t r e a m in a n incompressible viscous fluid are generalized to a p p l y to all ellipsoids of revolution a n d a special case of t h e circular disc has also been i n v e s t i g a t e d in detail. The conditions of flow are a s s u m e d to be such as to p e r m i t t h e use of Oseen's a p p r o x i m a t i o n in t h e equations of motion. T h e coefficient of couple has been found to t h e first order a p p r o x i m a t i o n in t e r m s of R( 1--S) or R ( S --1) where R is t h e R e y n o l d s n u m b e r a n d S = H ~/ 4 a r p ' W 2 t h e pressure n u m b e r which plays a n i m p o r t a n t part. T h e couple exerted on t h e b o d y is c o m p u t e d for various values of S a n d R.
