โœฆ Synopsis

At least two root-growth-inhibiting substances have been detected in extracts of Zea mays root tips. One has chromatographic properties similar to those of abscisic acid (ABA) and is largely confined to the cap. Another, which has not been identified, is present in the root apex but not in the cap. Indole-3yl-aeetie acid (IAA) is never detected in the root cap. Xanthoxin may be present in the root tip.

Zea mays is a salt-sensitive crop species which in saline (< 100 molm 3 NaC1) conditions suffers considerable growth reduction correlated with elevated Na + and C1-concentrations within the leaves. The abscisic-acid (ABA) content of roots of the carotenoid-deficient w-3, vp-5, and vp-7 mutants of Z. mays was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with an analysis sensitivity of 6 ng ABA g-1 fresh weight (FW). Roots of normal seedlings of the same lines were characterized by the fo
