✦ Synopsis

FCE will provide the DFC300A power plant, technical support and system commissioning services, while Chevron Energy Solutions will develop, engineer and construct the project over the next year and provide a turnkey on-site generation solution to the facility. This second sale for the partners, following that of a DFC1500 to a Californian jail last fall [FCB, December].

The DFC300A will be part of a hybrid power plant, teamed with a separate 285 kWe solar electricity generator. The fuel cell generator is expected to provide part of the base load heat and power requirements for the 680 000 ft 2 (6300 m 2 ) P&DC building, which is a major regional USPS hub employing more than 2700 people and processing 7.5m mailed items daily. The solar panels will generate power for peaking electricity demand.

According to Herbert T. Nock, FCE's senior VP of marketing and sales, combining DFC power plants with solar panels is the most environmentally sound approach to on-site power generation. 'Our base load DFC products are an ideal match for the peaking attributes of solar technology for commercial and industrial customers,' he says.

Commenting on the sale, Chevron Energy Solutions president Jim Davis believes that new opportunities for projects involving hybrid renewable power plants would continue, particularly in the public sector. The market for combined heat and power applications for US federal government facilities is estimated at 1590 MW, based on a September 2002 study prepared by the Federal Energy Management Program for the Department of Energy.
