✦ Synopsis

Productivity aspects of ensuring financially viable computer-aided design (CAD) system usage in companies are highlighted. A discourse on CAD programming details the attributes which a program should embody for successful implementation, together with the costs associated with program provision, development and maintenance. By identifying the major financial benefits of CAD, the requirements" for future systems are defined as having large data processing and storage capability, considerable computing power, and rapid file access and response times. The merits of workstation and PC-based CAD systems are reviewed and contrasted with reference to the above needs, and observations are made which act as pointers for future CAD system development if full financial benefit is to be obtained.
