✦ Synopsis
in each mechanism category. Survival was 9% for stab wounds, 4% for gunshot wounds, and 2% for blunt trauma. Of the blunt trauma patients, none survived when vital signs were absent. The authors advocate selective application of ED thoracotomy in children based on injury mechanism and physiologic status on ED presentation. Liberal use of ED thoracotomy in children following penetrating trauma was recommended, but in those pediatric patients undergoing blunt trauma, use of ED thoracotomy was limited to those demonstrating evidence of life on arrival.
