β¦ Synopsis
Effects of Cu and Si on the densities and stabilities of glassy Pd-Cu-Si alloys have been studied.
These effects are discussed in terms of chemical bonding. It is found that (I) the relatively high densities of metallic glasses as compared to those of correspondmg crystalline phases are a characteristic that is independent of composition,
(2) the differences in the radial distribution functions (RDF) are reflections of differences in the short-range structural arrangements in liquids and (3) metals and metalloicls of similar atomic sizes play distinctive roles in the formation and stability of metallic glasses.
Therefore, the properties of glassy alloys are apparently dominatecl by the chemcial bonding among the constituent atoms, rather than their relative atomic sizes.
