These dozen essays by British, French, and American historians are mostly papers delivered at the Third Annual Cultural History Conference, held at the University of Aberdeen in 1988. All are interesting and stimulating; some are witty as well. If they represent a fair sample of what is going on in modern European history today, the discipline is truly fortunate.
