✦ Synopsis

1973, this book is the proceedings of the 9th Annual Conference of the Ergonomics Society of Australia and New Zealand, held in the University of Adelaide, 24-25 August, 1972. The authors covered the fields of psychology, industrial medicine, physiology, and psychiatry and the papers can broadly be divided into two groups. Theoretical discussions and experimental studies of behaviour under stressful conditions were given in the first eight, while the last six dealt with aspects of stress, including medical and psychiatric, relevant to the ergonomics of the design of work, and of working and living conditions. There were a number of recurring themes, notably the relationship between stress and arousal and the conclusion that although performance is usually impaired by severe stress, moderate stress for short periods can be beneficial.
