Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) Londra’da varlıklı bir ailede dünyaya geldi. İyi bir akademik eğitimin ardından ticarete atıldı. Çetin ve macera dolu bir ticaret hayatının ardından siyasi yergilerle yazarlığa başladı. Gözü pek bir gazetecilik kariyeri ve pek beğenilen didaktik eserlerinin ardından, geç sayılabilecek bir yaşta onu dünya edebiyatının başköşelerinden birine yerleştiren Robinson Crusoe romanını yazdı. Defoe bu ölümsüz eserinde, gemi kazası sonucu düştüğü ıssız bir adada hayatta kalma mücadelesi veren Robinson Crusoe’nun hikâyesini ustalıkla anlatır. İnsan doğasını çok iyi tanıyan yazar güçlü kalemi ve yalın üslubuyla insanlık tarihinin her döneminde, her okurun kendisinden bir şeyler bulabileceği bir kahraman yaratmayı başarır. Çeşitli konularda pek çok eser yazan Defoe, İngiliz romanının kurucularından sayılır.

Fadime Kâhya (1963): A.Ü. Siyasal Bilgiler Fakültesi İktisat Bölümü’nde öğrenim gördü. Uzun yıllar bankacılık sektöründe çalıştı. B. Kellerman, D. Ulrich ve N. Smallwood’dan işletme ve iş idaresi kitapları çevirdi. Türkçeye kazandırdığı eserler arasında C. Eagleton’ın Paranın Tarihi adlı araştırması, B. Jerrold’ın Gustave Doré, A. Gold ve R. Fitzdale’in Sarah Bernhardt biyografileri, G. Elliot’ın Silas Marner adlı romanı da bulunmaktadır.
