Robin Hood es el legendario héroe de baladas inglesas, que robaba a gobernantes y eclesiásticos, acomodados, para entregar parte del botín a necesitados, menesterosos y oprimidos. Se lo sitúa entre los finales del siglo XIV y principios del XV, se duda si fue un personaje real o legendario. Pero se lo describe como un cazador que vivía en los bosques reales de Sherwood, en Nottinghamshire, y de Barnsdale, en Yorkshire. La obra narrativa que circula hasta nuestros días es de autor anónimo. Es una especie de relato épico formado por más de treinta baladas, recopiladas bajo el nombre de The gest of Robin Hood, e impresa alrededor del año 1500, dando cuenta de diversos pasajes de la vida del protagonista. En su banda se nombraba a Friar Tuck, a Little John y a Will Scarlet, como integrantes. Frente a las condiciones sociales medievales, Robin Hood defendía y era el héroe (antihéroe) de los necesitados.
