Walter Scott nous conte l'histoire d'un brigand au grand coeur, héros dans son cher pays, l'Écosse, qui ne peut manquer de faire penser à Robin des Bois. Il veut aussi nous montrer l'opposition entre l'Écosse moderne, industrieuse, représentée par Glasgow et la «sauvagerie» des campagnes et des hautes-terres à la même époque. Le roman est précédé d'un texte de l'auteur sur l'histoire de Rob-Roy et des clans.
