β¦ Synopsis
Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is characterized by the presence of more than 100 colorectal adenomatous polyps with an almost inevitable progression to cancer. At-risk individuals are screened and, if affected, prophylactic colectomy is performed. Operative options include total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis, which affords good functional results but leaves a risk of rectal cancer', and restorative proctocolectomy, which should eliminate the colorectal cancer risk at the expense of an increase in morbidity*. Patients with FAP are also at increased risk of developing a variety of extracolorectal cancers. This study addressed the relative impact of these cancers.
