The following article is reprinted from the Summer 1984 issue (Volume 4, Number 3) of the Journal of Healthcare Risk Management (then called Perspectives in Healthcure Risk Management). It was selected by ASHRM's Historical Task Force, which is preparing a memento book highlighting the society's first 20 years . In an effort to illustrate the growth of the profession of healthcare risk management over the years, the Journul will print one "retrospective" article per issue until the Fall 2000 issue, which will contain several older articles and conclude the retrospective printings.
