Under the guise of Michael Cotter, World Pumps visited its Manchester, UK headquarters a n d discovered its not-so-secret plan: to keep its focus on superior product, its committment to customer service, a n d its eye on the future.
Flexibox was established in 1945 in order to develop and market the unique mechanical seals designed and p a t e n t e d by the chief e n g i n e e r of Manchester Oil Refinery in order to prevent leakage from their centrifugal pumps. The success of these seals at the Manchester Oil Refinery led to an increased d e m a n d for seals from other refineries and eventually major oil companies throughout the UK and Europe were ordering Flexibox seals. It took only a short period for the general applications of these seals to spread into other industries such as chemical, petrochemical, refrigeration, aviation, marine, paper & pulp.
Successful m a r k e t i n g and a policy of comb i n e d product d e v e l o p m e n t resulted in continuous growth in the company's manufacturing and c o m m e r c i a l activities and the f o r m a t i o n of Flexibox overseas companies.
Later, Flexibox added the p r o v e n range of Metastream p o w e r transmission couplings to its range of mechanical seals. This business was further stimulated by the i n t r o d u c t i o n of a n e w range of c o u p l i n g s i n c o r p o r a t i n g a tangential form link in order to transmit torque. Metastream c o u p l i n g s are n o w used extensively t h r o u g o u t industry, particularly for process plants in p o w e r generation and marine applications w h e r e reliability is of paramount importance.
