Serafin and Ash are on the run from the Guild. There’s only one place for them to go, one place where Serafin believes they could find the help they desperately need. But it’s the one place that Serafin dreads. Home to the Circus.

Her Mother, Pythia, is delighted to see her, but Titus, her father, is less welcoming. As is Cassius, a trapeze artist, and, as it turns out, Serafin’s betrothed.

That night a gathering is held in honour of Serafin’s return, but the Circus is attacked by amongst others a dactyl with the ability to breathe fire and sets everything in its path aflame. In order to save her family and Ash, Serafin puts her life in danger by surrounding her attackers in a fire circle…

She finds the last of her people hiding in the forest and helps to heal where she can, but she knows she has to leave or put them in further danger. It is then that she decides she will track down the Great Elemental.
