โฆ Synopsis
IN an earlier paper' it was shown that 1,2-dlphenylbenzocyclobutene (I) readily reacts with dlenophiles at room temperature.
For example, with malelc anhydride, l,&dlphenylnaphthalene-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride (II) Is obtained in almost quantitative yield. This ring opening reaction has been found to be general for benzocyclobutenes,

d at room temperature under an inert gas atmosphee. The color of the reaction mixture changes from yellow to red-brown. The crude product is filtered off and recrystallized from CH,0H/CH2C12; yield ca. 51%.
