Inviando nel 1555 a Giorgio Vasari due liriche di forte ispirazione spirituale, Michelangelo scrive al più giovane amico una lettera in cui chiarisce con semplicità ed efficacia la sua condizione: "Messer Giorgio, io vi mando dua sonecti; e benché sien cosa scioca, il fo perché veggiate dov'io tengo i mie pensieri". Saranno sicuramente "cosa scioca" quei due sonetti, eppure nella definizione si avverte come una nota nostalgica, si coglie l'atteggiamento di un uomo che alla poesia ha dedicato tanta parte della sua straordinaria esistenza e che nelle sue liriche ha saputo comunicare con ruvida potenza espressiva la sostanza di un'esperienza individuale e universale profondamente segnata dalla passione e dall'inquietudine spirituale.
